Life critical and essential services include drug dispensaries, patient registration and tracking or records, electronic medical charts, systems for A&E, theatre and bed vacancy management, Biztalk (for integration and data sharing of applications) and so forth.
  • Role predominantly BAU based with project work as required. BAU tasks included monitoring SQL estate, morning checks, troubleshooting, resolution and root cause analysis.
  • Project work included SQL migrations and upgrades (from old versions of SQL to 2012/2014), commissioning of new services for application and project teams, proof of concept work. GSST also undergoing a huge shit to two new data centres, building in-house Software as a Service model. The DBA team was involved with overseeing the SQL aspects and advising on best practice for the implementation.
  • Automation of many manual BAU tasks for DBA team using PowerShell (such as automating disk reporting, morning checks, alerts, parsing SQL logs, reporting on HA status and so forth). This significantly cut down man hours required to perform these tasks.
  • Implementing well recognised community scripts as part of the management framework for the SQL farm, including those from Adam Mechanic and Ola Hellengren.
  • 99% of SQL farm in VM environment. Physical servers in cluster configurations. Storage and VM capability outsourced and as such critical to engage and maintain good vendor relations to assure quick turnaround of requests for information or tasks.
  • Improving Trustwide security methodologies, implementation of best practice security models (``no, you can't have Sysadmin...'' discussions and educating app and vendor teams).
  • Adhering to change management processes and documentation standards.
  • On-call support.
